Copying Wenzel’s Wenches Comics

Recently, I explored the comic art of Wenzel’s Wenches by adult cartoonist Bill Wenzel, published, I think, in the 1960s to 70s.

I wanted to dive deeper into specific artists and learn more about their work by engaging with their work. So, I created a small portfolio of work. For his work, I wanted something quick and simple to create and further my journey into illustration. Sometimes, when doing figure drawing sketches, you get too hung up on accuracy; here, I wanted to have some fun drawing, and cartoon is the fun side of illustration.

I used various mediums to experiment with different forms of expression and determine which medium I preferred. While I appreciate expressive gestures, marks, and shapes, I still like painting because texture can also convey meaning. I like the pen-based black and white drawings and coloured pencils, but I didn’t like the result with charcoal, possibly because I should have used charcoal pencils instead of sticks.

I like illustration because it’s quick, unfussy, and direct and gestural. It’s valuable for someone like me who doesn’t have much time. As much as I like comics, I don’t think I’m a storyteller with them, though their simplicity has a certain appeal.
